Sonam Wangchuks health is not good Centre should reconsider detention Supreme Court
New Delhi:- The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the central government whether the detention of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk can be reconsidered in view of her deteriorating health. A bench of Justices Arvind Kumar and PB Varale noted that Wangchuk has been lodged in Jodhpur jail under the National Security Act for the last five months and her medical report is worrying. The court asked the government prosecutor to respond to the matter by taking instructions from the government on humanitarian and health grounds, leaving aside the legal aspects.
On the other hand, the central government justified Wangchuk's detention, alleging that she was responsible for the violence in Leh, in which four people died.
According to the government, Wangchuk had incited the youth to join the 'Arab Spring' movement. However, Wangchuk's wife Geetanjali, calling the allegations baseless, told the court that her husband has always been in favour of peaceful protests and his detention is illegal. The hearing on the matter will continue on Thursday.
