SIR District Election Officer holds meeting with representatives of political parties
Sangrur, July 09:- Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Poonamdeep Kaur held a meeting with representatives of all recognized political parties at the District Administrative Complex regarding the rationalization of polling stations in view of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-2026.
The Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer stated that the rationalization of polling stations is being carried out under the SIR. As per the instructions of the Election Commission of India, New Delhi, the limit for voters per polling station has been set at 1200. The respective Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) of the five assembly constituencies in the district have conducted a 100% physical verification of all polling stations. Following the verification, proposals for polling stations were prepared after consulting with political parties at the ERO level.
The District Election Officer informed that based on the proposals, changes have been made to the buildings housing the polling stations. Previously, there were a total of 1006 polling stations in Sangrur district. Based on the received proposals, 36 new polling stations are to be established, which will increase the total number of polling stations to 1042.
No more than 4 polling stations in urban areas and 2 in rural areas are located in a single building. Priority has been given to government buildings (especially schools/colleges) while establishing polling stations. Arrangements for voter facilities (such as drinking water, ramps, necessary furniture, proper lighting, toilets, etc.) have been made at every polling station.
No polling station has been established inside a police station, hospital, or religious place. All polling stations are established on the ground floor. No polling station is outside the polling area, and no voter has to travel more than 2 kilometers to cast their vote.
During the meeting, representatives of recognized political parties were requested to provide their suggestions in accordance with the Election Commission's guidelines.
At the end of the meeting, she appealed to all political parties to cooperate with the district administration and Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in this important and time-bound work of Special Intensive Revision-2026 so that this process can be completed on time as per the guidelines.
