Mumbai- Sensex and Nifty saw sluggish growth in early trade on Thursday. Later, the benchmark indices were seen trading at a good pace throughout the day. Finally, the markets managed to close with gains. Metal and pharma indices managed to register the highest gains today.
Investors bought throughout the day today. BSE Sensex closed 398.44 points or 0.49% higher at 82,172.10. 24 stocks of Sensex were seen trading with gains and 6 stocks with losses. IT stocks like HCL Tech, TCS, Infosys and Tech Mahindra rose ahead of the announcement of quarterly earnings.
Top gainers: Tata Steel, HCL Tech, UltraTech Cement, Bharat Electronics, Sun Pharma and Tata Consultancy Services were among the major gainers.
Top losers: Axis Bank, Titan, Maruti and Tata Motors
Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty closed 135.65 points, or 0.54%, higher at 25,181.80. The Bank Nifty closed 173 points, or 0.54% higher at 56,192. In the currency market, the rupee strengthened by 2 paise to close at 88.78/$.
