Rare 5Kilogram Thyroid Tumor Successfully Removed at Park Gracian Hospital Mohali
Chandigarh: Doctors at Park Gracian Hospital, Mohali, have successfully removed a rare 5-kilogram thyroid tumor from a 65-year-old female patient.
The patient was brought to the hospital complaining of persistent and progressive swelling in the neck over the past few months, difficulty swallowing food, hoarseness of voice, and breathing difficulties. Senior Oncologist Dr. Sandeep Kukkar explained that what began as a small swelling gradually evolved over the years into a life-threatening condition, exerting severe pressure on vital nerves and blood vessels.
Due to the high-risk nature and complexity of the case, the patient had previously been denied surgery at several other hospitals. At Park Hospital, a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists in Onco-surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, ENT, Nuclear Medicine, and the Intensive Care Unit worked in close coordination to ensure safe and effective treatment.
The massive tumor was completely removed through a successful total thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection surgery performed by Dr. Girdhar Gopal and Dr. Siddharth Garg. Post-operative care was supervised by Lead Intensivist Dr. Deepak Khanduja and his team.
Dr. Sandeep Kukkar stated, "Timely diagnosis and a multidisciplinary team approach are crucial in managing such complex cases. With proper planning and coordinated care, even high-risk conditions can be successfully treated." Measures to Prevent Thyroid-Related Complications:
Ø Do not ignore persistent swelling in the neck—consult a doctor promptly.
Ø Pay attention to symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or breathing, or changes in voice.
Ø Do not delay treatment out of fear, as timely intervention can prevent complications.
Ø Undergo regular health check-ups, especially if the swelling is gradually increasing.
