Nepals former PM Oli arrested
Kathmandu: Nepal's former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli was taken into custody on Saturday. Police are investigating whether he was responsible for failing to prevent dozens of deaths during the 'Gen Z' protests last September. This week, a Nepali panel investigating the violence during anti-corruption protests recommended that the 74-year-old Oli be prosecuted for failing to stop a crackdown on the protests.
A total of 76 people were killed in the two-day unrest, which forced Oli to resign. "They were taken from their residence this morning," said Min Bahadur Shahi, a senior leader of Oli's Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist).
Police spokesman Om Adhikari confirmed the detention of Oli and his Home Minister Ramesh Lakhim. It is worth mentioning that rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah was sworn in as Prime Minister on Friday after winning the March 5 parliamentary elections.
