Meeting with representatives of various political parties regarding Special Intensive Revision

Sangrur, May 18:- The Election Commission of India, New Delhi, has issued a notification regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state of Punjab. To provide information about the guidelines and schedule issued for the Special Intensive Revision, a meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner's Office, Sangrur, under the directives of the District Election Officer. The meeting was chaired by the Assistant Commissioner (General), Sangrur, and attended by district presidents, secretaries, and representatives of all recognized political parties.
Under the Special Intensive Revision, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door visits across Punjab from June 25, 2026, to July 24, 2026, to get the Enumeration Forms filled. Currently, there are 9,15,752 voters in Sangrur district, which means each BLO will have to perform SIR for an average of 910 voters.
As part of the Pre-SIR activities in Sangrur district, 7,94,277 voters out of the total 9,15,752 have already been mapped with the 2003 electoral roll, which constitutes approximately 86.73%. Although filling out the form under SIR is mandatory for all voters, the SIR process will be much easier for the already mapped voters.
For the execution of the Special Intensive Revision in Sangrur district, a total of 1006 BLOs at 1006 booths, 107 BLO Supervisors, 5 Electoral Registration Officers, and 10 Assistant Electoral Registration Officers have been deployed.
The objective of the Special Intensive Revision is to include every eligible citizen of the district in the voter list and remove ineligible names. Holding dual vote is a punishable offense under the Indian Constitution, carrying a penalty of up to one year of imprisonment.
Along with the SIR, the work of rationalization of polling stations will be carried out until July 24, 2026, to ensure that the number of voters at any single polling station does not exceed 1200. If any political party has suggestions regarding this matter, they can submit them to the respective Electoral Registration Officer's offices in Lehra, Dirba, Sunam, Dhuri, and Sangrur.
If a voter fails to fill out the Enumeration Form under SIR, their name will not be included in the draft electoral roll, which is scheduled to be published on July 31, 2026. Claims and objections will be received from July 31, 2026, to August 30, 2026. These will be resolved by September 28, 2026, leading to the final publication of the electoral roll on October 01, 2026.
During the meeting, representatives of all political parties were appealed to extend full cooperation to the BLOs in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) for each polling booth.
Apart from others, the meeting was attended by Mrs. Paramjit Kaur (Election Tehsildar), Mr. Satgur Singh (Bahujan Samaj Party), Mr. Suresh Bedi (Bharatiya Janata Party), Mr. Amrit Brar (Congress), Mr. Gurnaib Singh (Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar)), Mr. Chamkaur Singh Kheri (CPI(M)), Mr. Harpal Singh (Aam Aadmi Party), and Mr. Naresh Kumar (Shiromani Akali Dal).
