Sensex jumps 500 points; Nifty crosses 24,350 The Indian stock market witnessed widespread buying on Friday, April 17. As a result, the benchmark indices - Sensex and Nifty 50 - closed higher for the second consecutive week. The Sensex closed 505 points or 0.65% higher at 78,493.54, while the NSE's flagship index, Nifty 50, also rose 157 points (0.65%) to close at 24,353.55.

The rupee strengthened 27 paise to close at 92.93 against the US dollar. Mid-cap and small-cap stocks outperformed the broader market; the Nifty Midcap 100 index rose 1.27%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index rose 1.48%.
Investors gained nearly ?5 lakh crore in a single trading session, as the total market capitalisation of companies listed on the BSE rose from ?461 lakh crore to around ?466 lakh crore. On a weekly basis, the Sensex rose 1.2%, and the Nifty rose 1.3%.
