Amritsar: Livasa Hospital Amritsar launched a stroke awareness campaign on Wednesday. The objective of this campaign is to educate people on how to recognize the early symptoms of a stroke and to seek immediate medical assistance, as every minute is critical for preserving brain function.
Dr. Arshdeep Kaur Sethi, Senior Consultant Neurologist at Livasa, stated, "Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality globally; however, timely identification and treatment can significantly improve the chances of survival and recovery."
She further added that common warning signs of a stroke include sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg; difficulty speaking; confusion; loss of balance; severe headache; or blurred vision.
Dr. Sethi emphasized that early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial to prevent permanent neurological damage.
She said, "A stroke is a medical emergency where every minute counts. Through early interventions—such as thrombolysis and specialized neurological care—we can significantly reduce disability and enhance recovery outcomes. Public awareness regarding symptoms, coupled with the need for immediate hospital access, can truly save lives."
Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Amanjot Singh emphasized that lifestyle factors—such as uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, and high cholesterol—significantly increase the risk of stroke; therefore, preventive health check-ups are equally important.
He noted that modern neurosurgical advancements have significantly improved outcomes in complex neurological emergencies.
