Karnals sky turned smoky crores burned on Diwali
Karnal, October 21: While people shared joy and exchanged gifts on Diwali, the craze for fireworks took a toll on Karnal. In a single night, Karnal spent between 100 and 300 crore rupees on fireworks. Heart patients were shaken by the sound of explosions resounding throughout the night. Asthma patients faced severe problems due to the black and toxic smoke that lingered in the sky.
Pollution levels in Karnal reached 184. Doctors have advised the elderly to avoid morning walks in the coming days. Asthma patients have been advised to wear masks while going out. The sound of firecrackers continued to echo through the city until late at night. Under the guise of 'green firecrackers,' loud and toxic firecrackers were openly sold. The Supreme Court had permitted fireworks for only two hours, but the orders were not followed anywhere.
For the past 25 years, concerns have been raised about fireworks and pollution. Every year, the National Green Tribunal and the Supreme Court advocate for stricter enforcement against pollution, but their impact remains elusive. This year, approximately ?8 lakh crore worth of fireworks were sold across the country. Despite administrative orders, the sale and use of banned fireworks continued in Karnal.
According to one estimate, levels of carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, lead oxide, ozone, and other harmful gases reached dangerous levels. Smog enveloped the sky throughout the day, and a haze was visible from early morning.
Regarding this situation, renowned chest specialist Dr. Naitrapal stated that rising pollution levels pose significant challenges to people suffering from chest diseases. He advised that children, the elderly, and those suffering from asthma should wear masks while outdoors.
