Jaishankar meets US Ambassador Sergio Gore
New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday held talks with US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gore. Meanwhile, tensions in Indo-US relations continue due to Washington's imposition of 50 percent tariff on Indian exports.
Jaishankar said on social media, "It was a pleasure to meet US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gore in New Delhi today. Discussed India-US relations and their global significance."
He said, "Best wishes to him for his new responsibility." Gore also met Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. "They had a fruitful exchange on the comprehensive global strategic partnership between India and the US and its shared priorities," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on 'X'. The Secretary of State wished Ambassador-designate Gore success in his assignment.’’
The relationship between New Delhi and Washington has been under severe strain since US President Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent. India has called the US action illegal, unreasonable and unjust.
In his response, Gore said he was grateful for Trump’s confidence in nominating him as the next US ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs. The US Senate confirmed his appointment this week. US officials said Gore would not present his credentials as US ambassador during his stay in New Delhi this time.
