Ignoring knee pain can be costly Livasa Hospital doctor
Hoshiarpur:- At a press conference on Friday, doctors at Livasa Hospital, Hoshiarpur, explained that ligament and sports injuries are no longer limited to professional athletes. Increasingly, such injuries are occurring among the general population during routine activities like gym workouts, running, cricket, football, and even simple knee-movement activities.
Dr. Harpreet Singh Bhatia, Senior Consultant - Orthopedics and Joint Replacement, explained that delayed diagnosis is one of the most common reasons patients develop long-term complications. Ignoring early symptoms like knee swelling, instability, or repeated sprains can lead to chronic pain, meniscus damage, joint instability, and early arthritis if left untreated.
Dr. Gurminder Singh, Consultant - Orthopedics and Joint Replacement, explained that ligament injuries are preventable and treatable, with early treatment saving joints and preventing future disability. He further emphasized that timely diagnostic testing and MRI, when necessary, play a crucial role in preventing long-term joint damage and ensuring an accurate diagnosis.
He also explained that commonly seen injuries include ACL tears, meniscus injuries, ankle ligament sprains, and shoulder ligament injuries. Many patients initially rely on rest or painkillers, which may temporarily alleviate discomfort but fail to address the underlying ligament damage.
Highlighting advances in treatment, Dr. Harpreet said, "Modern orthopedic techniques like arthroscopic ligament reconstruction enable minimally invasive repairs with faster recovery, less pain, and better functional outcomes. With proper physiotherapy and structured rehabilitation, patients can safely return to daily activities and sports."
Prevention tips to avoid ligament and sports injuries:
• Proper warm-up and stretching before sports or workouts
• Correct exercise technique
• Strengthening the quadriceps and hamstring muscles
• Maintaining a healthy body weight
• Wearing appropriate sports shoes
• Early physiotherapy after any sprain or injury
