High Court gives a setback to MLA Lalpura refuses to stay sentence
Chandigarh:- The Punjab and Haryana High Court today gave a setback to AAP MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura from Khadoor Sahib. The High Court has refused to stay the sentence passed by the lower court and dismissed Lalpura's petition. With the High Court's decision against MLA Lalpura, there are now chances of another by-election in Punjab. However, MLA Lalpura has one last chance to approach the apex court against the High Court's decision.
The eyes of political circles were fixed on the High Court's decision today and now it remains to be seen whether the path for the by-election of Khadoor Sahib constituency is opened or not. On September 12, the court of the District and Sessions Judge of Tarn Taran had sentenced half a dozen police personnel and 12 people including MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura to four years in prison. MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura is currently in jail while a policeman has died during the court proceedings.
This is a nearly decade-old case in which Lalpura has been convicted. According to details, a woman was openly beaten up in a palace in Tarn Taran and her clothes were also torn. This case dates back to 2013 when Manjinder Singh Lalpura was a taxi driver who was booked for assaulting a woman guest at a wedding. With today's decision of the High Court, Lalpura's MLAship is in danger.
