HAU receives patent for Bee Hive Strip HangercumSpacer

Hisar, March 2: Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University has developed a 'Bee Hive Strip Hanger-cum-Spacer' tool to aid in better beekeeping management. This tool has been granted a patent by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Baldev Raj Kamboj congratulated former HAU scientist Prof. OP Chaudhary for this achievement.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kamboj stated that this is a crucial tool in the field of beekeeping, aiding in better management of bee colonies. Its use will effectively prevent the Varroa mite, a major enemy of honeybees, and will significantly reduce the presence of harmful chemical residues in Indian honey.
This will increase the productivity of bees, improve honey production, and pollination efficiency. He explained that this device helps ensure the correct application of strips in beehives and the correct distance between them, preventing disruption to the natural behavior of the bees.

** Features of the Beehive Strip Hanger-cum-Spacer
Prof. OP Chaudhary, former Regional Director of the Regional Research Station of HKU, Karnal, and former Director of the Central Bee Research and Training Institute, Pune, highlighted the features of this device, stating that it is made of food-grade plastic, molded into a three-millimeter circular solid tube. It has two curved side supports to securely hold the top bar.
The two top supports rest on the top bar of the bee frame, and a V-bend in the middle, measuring 15 millimeters wide and deep, provides a suitable hanging platform for the chemical strip used for Varroa mite control between the two frames. After inserting the medicated strip into the V-bend, the beehive strip hanger-cum-spacer is placed on the top bar of two frames, maintaining a uniform distance of 15 millimeters between the two frames.
This specific distance allows the medicated strip to hang precisely between the two frames without coming into contact with the wax wax. This increased space allows the bees free access to the medicated strip, enabling even distribution of the atomicide/medicine throughout the bee colony. The strip prevents it from coming into contact with the beeswax throughout the entire length of the frame, thus preventing the spread of pesticides to the hive and honey.
He explained that this is the most affordable, effective, and safe tool for managing the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor, the most dangerous enemy of honeybees worldwide. He explained that this tool will provide access to other hive products, such as honey, pollen, propolis, etc., free from harmful chemicals.
Applying medicated strips to a colony takes only 15 seconds and solves the problem of having to space frames apart each time you open the bee box. The Bee Hive Strip Hanger cum Spacer's durability and design make it extremely durable.
