Haryana Metro gains momentum 1355 percent increase in passenger numbers
Chandigarh, March 19:- Haryana's urban transport network has registered remarkable progress. The number of metro passengers has increased by 13.55 percent in the year 2025-26, which shows the increasing confidence and clear trend of passengers towards public transport. This achievement came to light during the 64th meeting of the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) Board held here today under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary and HMRTC Chairman Shri Anurag Rastogi.
The number of passengers using the metro network between April, 2025 and February, 2026 was more than 1.74 crore, while this figure was 1.53 crore in the same period last year. The highest increase of 22.93 percent was recorded in the month of July, while all other months also saw positive growth. This reflects operational reliability, improved services and increasing priority given to passengers.
The performance of HMRTC has also been encouraging from a financial perspective. The fare revenue has increased by 12.64% till January 2026. At the same time, a remarkable growth of 108% has been recorded in non-fare revenue. This growth has been possible due to better utilization of station premises, income generated from advertising and commercial activities. Initiatives like auctioning of naming rights of stations and development of more advertising spaces are expected to further strengthen the financial position of HMRTC.
While presiding over the meeting, Chief Secretary Shri Anurag Rastogi said that the continuous growth in passenger numbers and freight reflects the success of Haryana’s integrated transport strategy. He directed to focus on time-bound implementation of projects, coordination among various agencies and providing services keeping passengers at the centre.
HMRTC Managing Director Shri Chandra Shekhar Khare said that along with operational achievements, progress is also being made on Metro and Regional Transport projects in the state.
Metro connectivity from Sector-56 in Gurugram to Panjgaon is being considered at full speed. In this regard, HSIIDC is studying the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and Layout Plan and finalizing the location for the depot in Sector-36A near Sihi village. At the same time, the techno-feasibility of the Ballabhgarh-Palwal Metro Extension Project is being assessed by RITES. A new study is also being done for Bahadurgarh-Aaudha connectivity, as HRIDC has decided to develop a new interchange station at Aaudha, so that the number of passengers can increase.
Gurugram-Faridabad Namo Bharat Corridor has achieved a significant milestone. Its alignment and station locations have been finalized and approved by the State Government and the DPR is being prepared by the NCRTC.
The Delhi-Kundani Metro Extension Project is proposed to be placed in the next meeting of the Haryana Cabinet for approval.
Progress has also been made on the Delhi-Sonepat-Karnal RRTS Corridor (136.3 km). The revised DPR has been submitted for financial approval, after which it will be placed before the Haryana Cabinet. Besides, the Delhi-Bawal RRTS Corridor has been approved at the PIB level and is under consideration of the Central Government.
The preparation of DPR for the major inner metro corridor within Gurugram city has also been approved. These include the 17.09 km long Bhondsi-Subhash Chowk-Rajiv Chowk-Sohna Chowk-Railway Station corridor, which will further strengthen connectivity in the Sohna Road area.
