Governments big decision Weight of school bags fixed
Chandigarh:- The Haryana government has taken an important step towards improving the education system, giving a big relief to school children and their parents. From the new academic session 2026-27, strict rules have been implemented to check the increasing weight of school bags and the arbitrariness of private schools. The maximum weight of the bag for children of class I and II has been fixed at one to one and a half kilograms.
The department believes that heavy bags at an early age can affect the physical development of children. The limit has been fixed at two to three kilograms for classes III to V, four kilograms for classes VI-VII, four and a half kilograms for classes VIII-VII and a maximum of five kilograms for class X. Schools will now be able to prescribe books only according to the recognized curriculum.
Forcing parents to buy expensive books of a particular publisher will be considered a violation of the rules. The Haryana Education Department has also issued a helpline number 0172-5049801.
