Give lethal injection to dangerous dogs Supreme Court
New Delhi:- The Supreme Court has dismissed all applications and petitions seeking modification or withdrawal of its order dated November 7, 2025 relating to the rehoming and sterilization of stray dogs.
The court has also dismissed all petitions challenging the validity of the Standard Operating Procedures issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India regarding stray animals.
The court made a strong observation and said that the states and union territories have failed to make continuous efforts towards creating the necessary infrastructure to deal with the growing population of stray dogs.
While delivering its verdict, the court said, "We cannot turn a blind eye to the reports coming out from different parts of the country regarding attacks on children and elderly people." The court further said that common citizens have become unsafe in public places, and international travelers have also become victims of such incidents.
The court directed that it be ensured that at least one fully functional Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre is set up in each district. This includes ensuring the availability of necessary infrastructure, surgical facilities and supporting logistics. In addition, every staff member should be trained. The court stressed that the states and union territories should take all necessary measures to implement these directions and comply with them without delay - both in letter and spirit.
