Farmers to increase the area of pulses crops Chief Agriculture Officer
Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, March 12, 2026:- Under the Mission ‘Self-Reliance’, the Punjab Government is providing Sathi Moong seed variety SML 1827 to the farmers on subsidy. The Punjab Government has received 03 quintals of seeds from the Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district, which will be given to the farmers at the rate of Rs 95/- ??per kg after deducting Rs 50 subsidy.
Chief Agriculture Officer Dr. Sukhjinder Singh Bajwa said that the farmers of the district should sow pulses in maximum area to increase the fertility of the land, adopt crop diversification and save the decreasing water level day by day. He also informed that SML 1827 has been recommended by the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. It yields 12 kg of seeds per acre and its average yield is 5 quintals per acre.
This variety matures in about 62 days and is resistant to yellow leaf spot disease. The suitable time for sowing this variety is from March 20 to April 10. Cultivation of pulses helps in increasing the fertility of the soil as these crops naturally fix nitrogen in the soil. This will give a big relief to the farmers in the expenditure on fertilizers and will make them more economically sustainable.
He said that the Agriculture Department is organizing camps in all the villages of the district to provide information about pulse cultivation. To get Sathi Moong seeds, farmers can contact the office of the Block Agriculture Officers so that they can get the subsidized seeds and sow at the appropriate time.
