Farmers Prioritizing Direct Seeding of Rice to Save Water Chief Agriculture Officer

Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, 27 May, 2026:- The underground water table of Punjab is depleting to an alarming level day by day. Keeping this in view and following the guidelines of Chief Agriculture Officer SAS Nagar Dr. Sukhjinder Singh Bajwa, progressive farmer Lawringer Singh Mundi of village Sill initiated the Direct Seeding of Rice (DSR) using the 'Tar-Wattar' (good soil moisture) technique in his fields, under the guidance of Block Agriculture Officer Dr. Shubhkaran Singh and Agriculture Development Officer (Sohana) Dr. Jaspreet Singh.
Under this 'Tar-Wattar' technique, applying the first irrigation to paddy at 21 days is recommended, which saves 15-20% water and leads to 10-12% more groundwater recharge, thereby preventing the underground water table from depleting further.
Lawringer Singh shared that due to direct seeding, the requirement for labor is significantly lower, and the yield of the subsequent wheat crop also turns out higher. He possesses the latest advanced split-seeder machine for direct seeding. Therefore, anyone who wishes to get direct seeding of rice done on a rental basis can contact him on his mobile number 9876647049.
The officials stated that farmers practicing direct seeding of rice must register themselves with the department so that the incentive amount of 1500 rupees per acre provided by the government can be deposited into the farmers' accounts.
