District Task Force Conducts Checks to Prevent Child Begging
Hoshiarpur – Under 'Project Jeevanjot-2'—an initiative launched by the Punjab government to curb child begging—raids were conducted across various areas of Dasuya, including the Railway Station, Bus Stand, Hajipur Chowk, and Blaggana Chowk, to prevent child begging. Furthermore, the general public was sensitized regarding the adverse effects of child begging.
District Program Officer Gagandeep Singh stated that periodic checks are being carried out under the directives of Dr. Baljit Kaur, Minister for Social Security and Women & Child Development, and under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain. He informed that these checks were executed by a team led by Harjit Kaur, Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, in collaboration with the District-level Task Force for the Prevention of Child Begging. During this operation, three children were rescued from begging in the Hajipur area and were presented before the Child Welfare Committee, Hoshiarpur. The Committee provided counseling to the children and, prioritizing their well-being, admitted them to the Nari Niketan in Jalandhar.
The Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee appealed to the general public that if any child is observed begging or engaged in child labor, they should report it to the Child Helpline at 1098, so that a single initiative on their part can transform a child's life. She further noted that information regarding various schemes implemented by the Punjab government for children aged 0 to 18 years can be obtained from the District Child Protection Unit, Hoshiarpur, or by calling the Child Helpline at 1098.
District Child Protection Officer Harpreet Kaur stated that such checks have been conducted previously and will continue to be carried out regularly in the future. She added that if any parents are found compelling their children to beg, strict action will be taken against them as well.
For matters concerning the safety and care of children, the District Child Protection Unit—located at Ram Colony Camp, Hoshiarpur—can be contacted at any time. Members of the Child Welfare Committee, including Jagdish Mittar, Case Worker Jaswinder Singh, and personnel from the Dasuya Police, were present during this operation.
