Defamation case Kangana Ranaut appears virtually in Bathinda court

Bathinda:- BJP MP from Mandi and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut today appeared virtually in the Special MP-MLA Court here in a defamation case filed by an elderly farmer Mahinder Kaur of Bahadurgarh Jandian village. During the hearing, Kangana's lawyer opposed the application seeking submission of the actress's passport.
The lawyer assured the court that the actress will appear in person whenever the directions are given.
The complainant's lawyer, however, objected to this argument, saying that the defence has put wrong facts on record.
Advocate Raghbir Singh Bahniwal, appearing for the complainant, told The Tribune that the defence's lawyer had claimed that Kangana is not facing any other civil or criminal proceedings. This claim is factually incorrect. The lawyer said, "As per our information, there are some civil and criminal cases pending against her.
We will file a detailed reply with supporting records on the next date of hearing on February 10,” Behniwal said. Two more government witnesses – Surjit Singh and Jasvir Singh, both farmer leaders – recorded their oral statements before the court today. The court has directed the defence counsel to cross-examine all four witnesses on the next hearing.
It is worth noting that during the previous hearing, the court had allowed Kangana to appear through video conferencing in future instead of personal appearance, citing security concerns and extensive police arrangements required for the actress’ court appearance. The court had also directed Ranaut to file an affidavit that she would not delay the case and ensure that her lawyer is present during all hearings.
The court, however, made it clear that Kangana will have to appear in person while recording her statement under Section 313 of the CrPC or whenever specifically ordered.
