Dadi Janki Was a Powerful Exemplar of Womens Empowerment Rajyogini Poonam Didi
Haryana/Hisar: Dadi Janki—a powerful symbol of spiritual consciousness, selfless service, and women's empowerment—continues to be remembered with reverence and inspiration across the globe to this day. A pivotal pillar of the Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya (Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University), Dadi Janki's life stands as an inspiring saga that radiated the new light of spiritual awakening not only across India but throughout the entire world.
Recalling her legacy, Rajyogini Poonam Didi of the Global Divine Light House (located in Sector-27, Chandigarh) remarks, "Dadi Janki was not merely a personality, but a living energy who awakened every soul to the realization of its true inner power." According to her, Dadi Janki's life served as a testament to the fact that true leadership does not stem from external authority, but rather from inner peace and spiritual strength.
Born in the Sindh province (now part of Pakistan), Dadi Janki made selfless service and spirituality her life's mission from a very young age. When she dedicated her life to the spiritual university in 1937, her decision was seen as a bold challenge to the prevailing social traditions of the time. Poonam Didi observes, "In that era, it was not easy for women to step forward in such a manner; yet, Dadi Janki proved that with unwavering determination, every obstacle can be overcome."
Between 1951 and 1974, she traveled extensively across India and the world, propagating spiritual values. She was one of the few female spiritual speakers of her time who bridged the cultures of the East and the West, delivering a universal message of the unity of humanity. Traveling to over 100 countries, she successfully conveyed the message of spirituality to every stratum of society. In this context, Poonam Didi notes, "Wherever Dadi Janki went, she connected with people's hearts—not merely their minds."
The establishment of the Global Co-operation House in London in 1974 was a direct result of her tireless efforts. Through this initiative, people from diverse sections of society were brought together on a common platform to work collectively towards fostering positive social change. Later, she became the Joint Chief Administrator of the organization and assumed responsibility for its service activities worldwide. In the words of Poonam Didi, “Dadi Janki’s leadership was a remarkable blend of discipline, compassion, and simplicity.”
Dadi Janki placed special emphasis on education and the development of values. Through the ‘Living Values Educational Initiative,’ she connected children in over 60 countries with moral and spiritual education. Launched in collaboration with educators associated with UNICEF, this initiative has today evolved into a global movement. Poonam Didi observes, “Dadi Ji believed that if the right values are instilled during childhood itself, society can transform spontaneously.”
In 1995, she led the delegation at the Fourth UN World Conference on Women held in Beijing. Furthermore, through programs such as “Sharing Our Values for a Better World,” she championed the message of integrating values into the fields of politics, science, education, and healthcare. Through initiatives like ‘Young Women of Wisdom,’ she made significant contributions toward the empowerment of young women.
Her international presence was equally impactful. Her participation in the “State of the World Forum” in San Francisco, the launch of the Chinese edition of *Companion of God* before an audience of 5,000 people in Singapore, and her hosting of the ‘Inter-Religious Understanding and Co-operation’ program in the UK—all attest to her global influence. She also served as the Vice-President of the ‘World Congress of Faiths’ and played a pivotal role in establishing the Global Retreat Centre near Oxford.
Dadi Janki’s life was not confined merely to spiritual practice; rather, it served as a powerful instrument for social transformation. She fostered self-reliance, self-confidence, and leadership capabilities among women. Poonam Didi remarks, “Dadi Ji made every woman realize that she was second to none, but rather possessed within herself a reservoir of infinite potential.”
In her vision, true development is that which encompasses the emotional, spiritual, and social upliftment of the human being. She spread a message of love, peace, and cooperation across the entire world, teaching that the true purpose of life is not merely to live for oneself, but to live for the welfare of society.
Even today, whenever Dadi Janki Ji is remembered, her life stands out as a source of inspiration. In the words of Poonam Didi, “Dadi Janki Ji taught us that if the mind is calm and the goal is clear, even the impossible becomes possible.”
These very teachings of hers continue to guide the lives of millions today, paving a bright path for generations to come.
