Confrontation between police and farmers marching to Delhi at Bastara Toll
Karnal, July 21: A confrontation took place on Monday between the police and farmers marching to Delhi to protest against the India-US trade deal at the Bastara Toll Plaza in Karnal. Farmers staged a protest by stripping off their shirts, following which the police detained hundreds of farmers, including several farmer leaders. They were all released later.
According to reports, farmers from across the country had given a call to march to Delhi. A large number of farmers from Punjab and Haryana set out for Delhi in their vehicles. The police attempted to stop the farmers from advancing by setting up barricades at the Bastara Toll Plaza. The farmers alleged that they were being forcibly stopped.
In protest, they demonstrated while partially undressed and remained adamant about marching to Delhi on foot. During this time, a scuffle and a tense standoff ensued between the police and the farmers. Traffic on the national highway was also disrupted for some time due to the incident.
