Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, October 19: Civil Surgeon Dr. Sangeeta Jain appealed to celebrate a pollution-free and green Diwali. The Civil Surgeon said that in view of the increasing pollution in the environment today, bursting of crackers should be avoided. He said that bursting of crackers not only worsens the air quality but also poses a risk to human health.
Stressing the need to celebrate a safe Diwali, Dr. Jain said that if crackers are to be burst, precautions should be taken. It is important to take special care of the eyes and also keep buckets of water and bags of soil within easy reach. Apart from this, small children should be kept away from fireworks and parents should be present with the children. While bursting crackers, one should not wear silk and loose clothes but cotton clothes. Crackers should never be held in the hand and one should not try to re-flash unlit crackers.
He said that the Health Department is committed to a safe and environment-friendly Diwali. During the day and night of Diwali, all the major health institutions of the district like District Hospital Mohali, Kharar, Kurali, Gharuan, Derabassi, Dhakoli, Lalru, Banur, Boothgarh etc., where emergency services will remain operational as usual, have been put on special duties of doctors and other staff so that immediate medical assistance can be provided in case of any untoward incident.
He said that Diwali is a symbol of mutual love, happiness and togetherness, therefore everyone should celebrate this festival together with this spirit and at the same time it is important to take care of their health and environment.
