Census work accelerates in Haryana
Chandigarh, May 17- Commendable progress has been recorded in the ongoing House Listing and Residential Enumeration work under Census 2027 in Haryana. House listing activities have started in most areas of the state.
Chief Secretary Shri Anurag Rastogi today held a comprehensive review meeting with Divisional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, Municipal Commissioners, District Education Officers and other senior officers through video conferencing to review the preparations for completing this national task in a time-bound manner.
During the meeting, the Chief Secretary directed all the officers to give top priority to the Census work and complete it with full commitment, accountability and efficiency. He said that the Census provides an important basis for policy formulation, outlining development plans, allocation of resources and implementation of welfare schemes. Therefore, its successful conduct is very important for governance and administration. He said that if any employee is negligent or uncooperative in the census duty, strict disciplinary action will be taken against him.
Haryana Census Operations Director Dr. Lalit Jain informed that work has started in more than 97 percent of the total House Listing Blocks (HLBs) in the state. House listing activities have started 100 percent in Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Karnal, Fatehabad, Hansi, Charkhi Dadri and Faridabad districts, which shows the efficiency and commitment of the district administration, enumerators and supervisory staff.
Charkhi Dadri district is leading in the state by completing more than 32 percent of the work, while Fatehabad, Hansi, Jind and Mahendragarh districts have also registered commendable progress.
The pace of work in urban areas is also satisfactory. Among the municipal corporations, Panipat has completed the maximum work, followed by Rohtak and Faridabad.
During the meeting, Dr. Sumita Mishra, Financial Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management Department, stressed on the active cooperation of Nagar Committees, Sarpanches, Panches and Resident Welfare Associations for the smooth conduct of the census work. She also called upon the Gram Sabhas to actively involve them in the census process and conduct information, education and communication activities to increase public awareness.
All the district administrations were advised to adjust the working hours of the employees engaged in census duty as per the requirement, so that the field work can be completed within the stipulated time.
The Chief Secretary also reviewed the preparations for the Special Intensive Revision starting from June 15, 2026. The officials discussed streamlining training programmes and maintaining coordination between Census and SIR work, so that unnecessary workload is not imposed on BLOs and field staff. The Chief Secretary said that BLOs engaged in Census work may be exempted from election related work till May 31, 2026. The meeting was attended by Shri D. K. Behera, Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management Department, along with other senior officers.
