Adopt goat farming to enhance income and employment opportunities Dr Mandeep Singh

Sangrur, August 03:- A five-day vocational training course on “Goat Farming” concluded today at PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur. The training program was organized under the able guidance of Dr. Mandeep Singh, Incharge, PAU-KVK Sangrur A total of 45 farmers, farm women, and rural youth from Sangrur and Mansa districts participated in the training program. 
Inaugurating the program, Dr. Mandeep Singh welcomed the participants and briefed them on the mandate and activities of the KVKs. He emphasized the potential of goat farming as a subsidiary enterprise in agriculture and encouraged trainees to adopt it for enhancing income and employment opportunities. 
He said that Goat farming is low-risk, high-demand, and scalable enterprise. It’s one of the fastest ways for small and marginal farmers to increase income without needing much land. 
A pre-training knowledge assessment was also conducted to gauge participants’ existing understanding. Dr. Ajay Singh, Assistant Professor (Animal Science) and Course Coordinator, delivered lectures on key aspects of goat farming, including history and breeds, selection of animals, care and management of newborn kids and milking does, housing, water management, control of endo and ecto parasites, and record keeping.
Dr. Gurlal Singh, Assistant Professor (Animal Science), KVK Bathinda, spoke on feed formulation and nutrient management for goats.  
Dr. Onkar Jindal, Veterinary Officer, Sangrur, addressed common goat diseases, preventive measures, biosecurity practices, and the vaccination schedule.  
Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Fishery Officer, Sangrur, delibrated on integrated goat and fish farming.  
Surmukh Singh, Lead Bank Manager, SBI Sangrur, shared information on subsidies and loan schemes for goat farmers.
 As part of the training, participants visited the Livestock Farm at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, where they interacted with experts and observed best practices in goat management. At the end, published literature was distributed to all the participants. 
To ensure continued support, a WhatsApp group of trainees was formed for sharing updates and technical advisories related to goat farming and animal husbandry.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks and encouragement for participants to seek ongoing technical guidance from KVK experts for their future ventures in goat farming.
