New Delhi, May 19- The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear the plea of ??Ashoka University's Political Science Department Head Ali Khan Mahmudabad challenging his arrest for social media posts related to Operation Sindoor.
A bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih took note of the arguments of senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the associate professor, and said the petitions will be listed for hearing on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Kapil Sibal, while presenting the arguments, said, "He has been arrested for making patriotic statements. Please list it for today."
It is worth mentioning that the professor was arrested on Sunday after two FIRs were registered on serious charges for his social media posts related to Operation Sindoor. The Haryana State Women's Commission had recently sent a notice to the associate professor questioning her comments, though Mahmudabad said she had been misunderstood and claimed she had exercised her fundamental right to freedom of speech. Haryana DCP Narinder Kadian said two FIRs have been registered at Rai police station in Sonipat. One of them is based on a complaint by Haryana State Women's Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia and the other is based on a complaint by a village sarpanch.
