The initiative was aimed at raising awareness about road safety, importance of helmet usage and early recognition of head injuries as well as prompt treatment to reduce mortality and disability. The event was organised under the leadership of Inspector Traffic Police Dr. Pravesh Sharma in collaboration with Chandigarh Police. Medical Superintendent Dr. Vipin Kaushal and Dean Academics, PGIMER Chandigarh Dr. R K Ratho were also present on the occasion, who emphasised on the important role of compliance with traffic rules in preventing head injuries as well as prompt recognition of danger signs and prompt treatment.
Professor Nidhi Panda, Head, Department of Neuroanaesthesiology and Neurocritical Care, along with Professor Hemant Bhagat and Dr. Amiya Kumar Barik, emphasised the importance of promoting a culture of awareness, prevention and preparedness and stressed that such initiatives can help save countless lives and reduce the burden of traumatic brain injuries.
As part of the awareness drive, the Traffic Police Division of Chandigarh conducted a demonstration on correct use of helmets and following traffic rules, educating passersby about road safety measures. Enhancing the impact of the programme, the faculty and residents of PGIMER organised a walkathon followed by three engaging street plays.
These demonstrations effectively conveyed the message of preventing head injuries, avoiding falls in high-risk populations such as the elderly and children, as well as recognising early warning signs and taking timely medical interventions – which are key factors in reducing mortality and long-term disability.
This initiative reinforced the need for collective responsibility in making roads safer and preventing traumatic head injuries. PGIMER Chandigarh is committed to promoting community education, preventive healthcare and road safety awareness because every life matters!
