Giving details of the efforts being made for the betterment of his Lok Sabha constituency Sri Anandpur Sahib at an event organised by a private channel here today, he said that the Chandigarh International Airport Authority, which manages the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, of which he is co-chairman as an MP, has held a meeting on this serious issue for the first time in 10 years.
He said that the Mohali airport has the capacity to handle international flights. He said that in the next few days, he will meet the Union Civil Aviation Ministry along with the MP from his neighbouring Lok Sabha constituency Chandigarh and will also meet the representatives of the airlines operating on the international air route and ask them to show interest in international flights on this route.
He said that Mohali airport handles up to 50 lakh passengers in a year. He said that according to an estimate, 8 to 10 thousand taxis and other vehicles carry passengers from the state to fly from Indira Gandhi International Airport every day. He said that similarly, 25 percent of the passengers flying abroad from Indira Gandhi International Airport are from Punjab.
If Mohali airport gets a direct international route, it will become very easy for industrialists and Punjabis living abroad. He further said that although the real estate and housing sector is very big in Mohali and nearby Kharar, Zirakpur areas, but he feels that in view of the congestion in these cities, this housing sector should move towards Ropar and Nangal so that along with the progress of those areas, congestion in this area can be stopped.
He said that due to this crowd, many times the builders are not able to provide the necessary facilities to the people. He said that he will also discuss this matter with the Punjab government and Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. The Lok Sabha member, who himself was a good basketball player during his studies at Punjab University, said that he would also try to get an international level football stadium built in Mahilpur, a land famous for football.
Apart from this, works like volleyball ground in Balachaur (Tapriyan), basketball ground in Chamkaur Sahib and synthetic track in the sports complex of Sector 78 in Mohali have been started, while efforts are also on to promote handball and rowing in Ropar. Apart from this, they are also trying to create a tourist circuit (pilgrimage) for the region from tourism point of view keeping in view the historical importance of Sri Anandpur Sahib Parliamentary Constituency and nearby Shri Naina Devi.
