SAS Nagar, January 17, 2025: MLA Kulwant Singh has raised serious safety concerns over the ongoing first floor construction of Government High School in Phase-5, SAS Nagar. In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Mohali, the MLA has highlighted several lapses in safety standards and warned that the construction poses a great risk to students and staff.
Highlighting major concerns on the issue, MLA Kulwant Singh said that the construction reportedly has major flaws that may compromise the stability of the existing ground floor structure, increasing the risk of damage. "The construction work is going on without the required safety checks, posing a serious risk to students and staff," Kulwant Singh said. He said the work allegedly does not follow the prescribed construction and safety guidelines, further increasing the risk.
MLA Kulwant Singh has urged the authorities to immediately cordon off the unsafe parts of the building to prevent accidents, ensure thorough inspection of both the under-construction and existing parts, and direct the contractor to strictly follow the approved construction and safety protocols. The MLA has stressed that negligence in ensuring the safety of school buildings is unacceptable.
He has demanded strict action against the responsible contractor and officials involved in this lapse. Kulwant Singh said, "This incident raises serious questions on the safety standards in educational institutions. Immediate action is required to prevent any untoward incident and protect the lives of students and staff." The letter has urged the administration to take immediate steps to resolve the issue and ensure that all future construction projects follow safety norms.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner immediately dispatched an administrative team led by SDM Mohali Damandeep Kaur to inspect the spot. District Education Officer Dr. Ginny Duggal and Tehsildar Arjun Singh Grewal were also among the other members. SDM said that he has inspected the school building under construction and has given instructions to give special importance to the safety of school students during construction.
He said that he has instructed the District Education Officer to resolve the concerns expressed by the MLA and Deputy Commissioner and to pay immediate attention to the flaws in the building construction.
