77yearold COPD patient gets new life after TAVR procedure at Livasa Hospital Amritsar

Amritsar:- A 77-year-old patient suffering from severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and severe aortic stenosis got a new life after a successful Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure at Livasa Hospital Amritsar.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Dr Arjun Ved Gupta, Consultant Cardiologist at Livasa Hospital Amritsar, shed light on the clinical complexity and success of the procedure.
“This was a high-risk case due to the patient’s severe COPD and frailty. TAVR allowed us to replace the defective valve without putting the patient through the stress of open-heart surgery,” he said. “The rapid recovery and improvement in symptoms confirm the effectiveness of minimally invasive cardiac interventions in carefully selected patients.”
The patient initially experienced gradual shortness of breath during routine activities and eventually even while speaking. Further testing revealed a serious and often overlooked cause: severe aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve that significantly restricts blood flow from the heart.
Dr Gupta explained that given the patient’s fragile lung condition and overall frailty, conventional open-heart surgery was too risky and considered unsafe. Dr Gupta said that a multidisciplinary cardiac team from Livasa Hospital, Amritsar, Carefully evaluated the case and opted for TAVR, which is a minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure that replaces the defective valve without opening the chest.
