Chandigarh, 25 September:- Max Pulmonology Consultant Dr. Kapil Kumar, stressing the importance of recognising persistent respiratory symptoms and seeking timely medical evaluation, said that asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), lung infections and other respiratory disorders can severely affect quality of life if they are not diagnosed in time or properly managed.
Dr. Kumar said that persistent cough, shortness of breath, breathlessness/wheezing, recurrent chest infections, excessive mucus production or reduced ability to undertake physical exertion should not be ignored, especially when symptoms persist or recur frequently.
He informed that smoking and passive smoking are major risk factors for lung diseases, while prolonged exposure to air pollution, dust and chemical fumes can also affect respiratory health.
However, he said that respiratory problems can also affect non-smokers and young individuals, making it important to seek medical advice when symptoms persist.
“Persistent cough or shortness of breath is often dismissed as a result of a change in weather, pollution or a common infection. However, when these symptoms persist or begin to interfere with daily activities, they should be medically evaluated.”
Dr. Kumar said that early diagnosis of respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD can help in controlling symptoms, preventing complications and improving quality of life.
He clarified that people should remain cautious about their exposure to tobacco smoke, air pollution, dust and occupational fumes, as these can adversely affect lung health.
Dr. Kumar said that taking continuous preventive measures is also essential to protect lung health.
He advised that staying away from tobacco, remaining physically active, improving indoor air quality and following recommended vaccinations can help reduce the risk of respiratory problems.
