OSLO - Venezuela's Maria Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. Maria Corina Machado is also known as the Iron Lady.
The Nobel Committee said Machado was awarded the prestigious award "for her tireless efforts in promoting the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for her struggle for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."
The committee said it decided to focus on Venezuela this time, despite the fact that this year has been in the news due to repeated public statements by US President Donald Trump that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.
After announcing Maria Corina Machado's name for the prize, the Nobel Committee said that she is accustomed to working under pressure from people or their supporters who say she deserves the prize. "All politicians want to win the Nobel Peace Prize," Friedens, the head of the Nobel committee, told Reuters.
Earlier, hours before the Nobel Peace Prize was announced, the Kremlin claimed it would support US President Donald Trump's name for the award. Russia will support US President Donald Trump's name for the Nobel Peace Prize, Russian news agency Tass quoted Yuri Ushakov as saying in the Kremlin.
However, experts believed that the award would go to someone else instead of Trump. Russia has repeatedly reiterated that it is grateful to Trump for his efforts to stop the Ukraine war. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also said in comments published on Thursday that Kiev would nominate Trump for the Nobel if Trump succeeds in stopping the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
