Chandigarh, September 29:- Haryana Health Minister Aarti Singh Rao today, on the occasion of ‘World Heart Day’, appealed to the citizens of the state to remain alert and aware about heart health. In a special public awareness message issued under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) and the Health Department, Haryana, the Health Minister said that high blood pressure (hypertension) is the biggest and preventable risk factor for heart diseases and is also considered a ‘silent killer’. To prevent this risk, every person aged 30 years and above should get their blood pressure checked at least once a year.

Health Minister Aarti Singh Rao specifically advised patients suffering from high blood pressure to seek regular medical advice, regularly take the medicines prescribed by doctors to avoid complications, not change medicines on their own and get regular follow-up at their nearest government health centre or NCD clinic.

She said that lack of exercise, obesity, an unbalanced diet, consumption of tobacco and alcohol, and excessive stress are the major risk factors for heart diseases. To prevent these, citizens should exercise regularly for 30 to 45 minutes a day at least five days a week, keep their body weight under control and consume more fresh fruits and vegetables while keeping the amount of salt in their diet low.

Along with this, a healthy and happy life can be lived by staying away from tobacco and alcohol consumption and incorporating yoga and meditation into the daily routine.
