Chandigarh/Mohali, 26 April 2025 - The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued important directions in the case of suspicious and unusual death of 20-year-old Akash Khajuria. Akash, who was a student of BSc Radiology at CGC Janjeri, Mohali and lived in Amyra City, Kharar, died suddenly on 22 March 2025.
The case relates to a petition CRWP-4008-2025 filed by his father Bharat Bhushan Khajuria in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, in which he had demanded that an inquiry be conducted under the supervision of senior officers or a Special Investigation Team (SIT) be formed, as the local police was not carrying forward the investigation properly.
A bench of Hon'ble Justice Shri Rajesh Bhardwaj of the High Court heard the case on 24 April 2025 and pronounced the verdict. Petitioner's counsel Chetan Sehgal informed that Bharat Bhushan Khajuria had filed a representation before the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), SAS Nagar, Mohali and other officers on 7 April 2025, but no action has been taken on it yet and neither is the police taking the investigation forward.
Background of the case
Bharat Bhushan Khajuria, a resident of Shakti Nagar, Jammu, has alleged that his son Akash, who studied in CGC Janjeri and lived in Amaira City, Kharar, died under suspicious circumstances. On March 22, 2025, Suresh Sharma, father of Akash's roommate Ansh Sharma, called Bharat Bhushan and informed him about this, but nothing was told about the cause or circumstances of death. Bharat Bhushan alleged that the local police did not pay heed to his complaint and were made to sign blank papers to take the body.
He also alleged that Akash's roommate may have suspicious links with one of his friends, who is accused of being a habitual offender. Bharat Bhushan says that the roommate was present at the spot at the time of death and suspects that he tried to destroy the evidence. Even after 16 days, no FIR was registered and the investigation was not being conducted properly, due to which he approached the High Court and filed a petition.
High Court's direction
During the hearing, the Hon'ble High Court issued notice to the Senior Deputy Advocate General of the State Government, Mr. Tarun Agarwal and heard the government's side in the matter. Finally, the High Court directed the SSP, SAS Nagar, Mohali to decide on the representation of Bharat Bhushan Khajuria dated 7 April 2025 within a month in accordance with the law. With this, the court disposed of the petition.
Family's demand
Bharat Bhushan Khajuria has appealed that the investigation of this suspicious death should be taken seriously and strict action should be taken by registering an FIR against the culprits. He said that he is in deep mental pain due to the death of Akash and hopes for justice.
