New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday said it will hear former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar's appeal against his conviction and life imprisonment in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case after the Diwali break.
It is worth noting that the Supreme Court's break will begin from October 20, after which it will resume work on October 27. Justices J. K. Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi, while hearing the case, asked the lawyers of the parties to specifically explain the charges in the case, the testimony of witnesses and the decisions of the trial court and the high court.
The high court had set aside the 2010 verdict of the trial court, in which Kumar was acquitted in the case. In the Supreme Court, senior lawyer R. S. Cheema appeared, while Kumar was represented by senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan.
Apart from Kumar's appeal, the appeals of co-accused Balwan Khokhar and Girdhari Lal were also listed for hearing in the Supreme Court. Kumar surrendered before a trial court in the capital on December 31, 2018, in compliance with the High Court's December 17, 2018 verdict. Kumar resigned from the Congress party after being convicted in the case.
