Derabassi, July 15: Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal while replying to the attention motion moved by Derabassi MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa assured that the government will soon implement the proposal to widen Ghaggar River near Tiwana village of Derabassi Assembly Constituency and strengthen the embankment by filling earth.
MLA from Derabassi Assembly Constituency S. While replying to the attention motion presented by Kuljit Singh Randhawa in the Assembly, the Water Resources Minister informed that due to heavy rainfall in the year 2023, the water level of Ghaggar river in village Tiwana had increased considerably, due to which the flood water of Ghaggar river filled the agricultural land on the left side and due to erosion the land level went down by about 8 to 10 feet, after which the department had installed stone revetments and studs in a length of 2500 feet to protect the agricultural land from erosion.
To support this revetment, a dam was built by depositing soil behind it. He informed that the department had spent Rs 10 crore on this occasion to do this work and since then works have been done from time to time at a huge cost.
In response to the concern expressed by MLA Randhawa for the people of his constituency, Mr. Goyal informed that on 29th June, 2025, due to heavy rains in the catchment area of Ghaggar river, the water level of Ghaggar river suddenly increased, but the stone riveting was completely fine. However, the earthen embankment behind the riveting was damaged by erosion at a small place.
The department has taken immediate action and repaired the embankment. The department has completed this repair work at its level. He informed that on 8th July, 2025, a lot of water again came in Ghaggar river, but it passed without causing any damage to this embankment.
The Cabinet Minister assured that the department will get this work done with immediate effect (from tomorrow) at a cost of about Rs 11 lakh to widen the Ghaggar in village Tiwana on the right side of Ghaggar river and to widen/strengthen the embankment by putting this soil on the left side of the embankment.
