Bengaluru, June 5- An FIR has been registered against Royal Challengers Bangalore, event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks, Karnataka State Cricket Association and others in connection with the stampede that broke out near Chinnaswamy Stadium in the city yesterday, police said on Thursday. Eleven people died and 56 were injured in the stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, police said on Thursday. According to the police, the case has been registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Cuban Park police station.
The case has been registered under sections 105 (unintentional murder), 115 (wilful wounding), 118 (wilful wounding or grievous hurt by use of dangerous weapons or instruments), 190 (liability of members of unlawful assembly for offences committed in pursuit of a public object), 132 (assault or criminal force to prevent a government servant from discharging his duty), 125(12) (acts endangering life or personal safety of others), 142 (unlawful assembly) and 121 (incitement to commit an offence) of the BNS. Meanwhile, the Karnataka government told the High Court on Thursday that the investigation into the stampede that took place in front of Chinnaswamy Stadium yesterday has been handed over to the CID.
The state government said that a special investigation team has been formed within the CID to ensure a complete and impartial investigation of the case. Earlier today, the High Court had asked the state government to file a status report in the stampede case. Meanwhile, 15-year-old girl Divyanshi, who died in the stampede, claimed that she had to wait for four hours to file an FIR.
Meanwhile, IPL champions Royal Challengers Bangalore have announced a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of 11 cricket fans who lost their lives in the stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium here during the team's victory celebrations. It is noteworthy that during this incident that happened yesterday, lakhs of people gathered to catch a glimpse of Virat Kohli and company, due to which there was complete chaos and finally a stampede outside the stadium on Wednesday, due to which 11 people died.
RCB said in a statement on Thursday, "The unfortunate incident that took place in Bengaluru yesterday has caused immense grief and pain to the RCB family." More than 50 people were also injured in the incident and the franchise said a fund is being set up to help them.
The statement further said, “As a gesture of respect and solidarity, RCB has announced a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh each to the eleven families of the deceased. In addition, a fund called RCB Cares is also being set up to help the fans injured in this tragic incident.” A magisterial inquiry is currently underway into the tragedy and its report is expected to be out within the next fortnight.
Notably, RCB is facing widespread criticism for going ahead with the victory celebrations just a day after winning the trophy. This is because the administration and police authorities did not have enough time to make adequate security arrangements to handle such a large crowd.
BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia had already raised questions on Wednesday about the shortcomings and loopholes in the arrangements and also stressed the need for proper coordination between the franchises, police and district administration to run such a programme smoothly. He cited the seamless victory parade in Mumbai after India's T20 World Cup win last year, which brought lakhs of people out on the streets.
