Kolkata, June 5- The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted interim bail to social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli. She was arrested by the Kolkata Police for allegedly posting a video with communal remarks. The court said the complaint against her does not disclose any serious offence.
Panoli, a law student, was arrested from Gurugram in Haryana last week after an FIR was registered against her at Kolkata's Garden Reach police station in the wake of a viral video.
In this video, she had made controversial comments against those criticising Bollywood actors on Operation Sindoor. The police had said that her now-deleted video contained "derogatory" comments against the minority community.
A bench of Justice Raja Basu Chaudhary granted him bail on a surety bond and a surety bond of Rs 10,000 each and directed him to cooperate in the investigation of the case. The court also directed him not to leave the country without the court's permission.
The high court also directed the police to provide security to Panoli, as he had complained that he was receiving threats after his social media post.
