SAS Nagar, May 28- Keeping in view the increasing filth and garbage situation in Mohali city day by day, Deputy Mayor of Mohali Kuljit Singh Bedi met Deputy Commissioner of Mohali and handed over a memorandum demanding immediate intervention to prevent serious health risks for the residents and to provide land for garbage disposal in coordination with GMADA.
The memorandum said that due to non-disposal of garbage, heaps of garbage have piled up on the streets, mohallas and main roads of the city, which has not only spoiled the beauty of the city but has also created a situation giving rise to serious diseases. The Deputy Commissioner was informed that the main reason for the present problem is the lack of suitable place to dump garbage. The existing dumping ground has been closed due to the orders of the High Court and National Green Tribunal, and Jimada has not provided any new space, due to which the Municipal Corporation is trying to dispose of the waste at RMC points, which is inadequate.
The Deputy Mayor said that the Mohali Municipal Corporation does not have any land of its own, and it is dependent on the land of Jimada. He mentioned that Jimada earns crores of rupees by selling land, but does not provide any suitable place to solve the basic problem of the city (waste disposal).
The memorandum expressed concern that garbage is being burnt at various places during the summer season, due to which pollution is increasing and posing a threat to the lives of people. It was said that with the upcoming monsoon season, if the issue of garbage is not resolved, it may pose a big threat to the city. The Deputy Mayor requested the Deputy Commissioner to coordinate between Jimada and the Municipal Corporation as the coordinator of the city and take necessary steps to provide a suitable place as soon as possible. This initiative will not only help in improving the sanitation system of Mohali, but will also be important for the protection of public health and environment.
