New Delhi, March 5- The CBI has sent a judicial request to the US seeking information from private investigator Michael Hershman, who had expressed his willingness to share crucial details about the Rs 64 crore Bofors bribery case of the 1980s with Indian agencies. Fairfax Group chief Hershman had come to India in 2017 to participate in a conference of private detectives.
During his visit, he had alleged at various forums that the then Congress government had derailed the investigation into the scam. He had said that he was ready to share the details with the CBI. Hershman had claimed in an interview that he was appointed by the Union Finance Ministry in 1986 to investigate violations of currency control laws and money laundering by Indians abroad and to trace assets outside India, some of which were related to the Bofors deal.
The CBI had also approached the Finance Ministry seeking documents related to Hirschmann's appointment and asked whether he had submitted any reports, but the records of that time could not be made available to the agency. The agency addressed Hirschmann's claims in several interviews and announced in 2017 that the matter would be investigated as per due process.
