SAS Nagar, April 11- The Muslim community of Mohali district, under the leadership of Dr. Anwar Hussain, protested against the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 by holding a sit-in outside the Deputy Commissioner's office and shouting slogans against the central government. Copies of the Waqf Amendment Bill were also burnt on this occasion. This protest by the Muslim community received strong support, and leaders from various sections of society, including the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha, Kisan Unions, Congress, and Akali Dal, also participated in the sit-in to support the Muslim community.
On this occasion, former Union Minister S. Balwant Singh Ramuwalia, farmer leader Paramdeep Singh Baidwan, Qaumi Insaaf Morcha leader Baljit Singh Bhau, Akali Dal constituency in-charge Parvinder Singh Sohana, and other leaders said that the recent amendments to the Waqf Act are against Articles 14, 15, 25, 26 and 29 of the Constitution and a direct attack on religious freedom and the right to independently run institutions of one's own faith.
The leaders said that just like other religious institutions (such as Kashi Vishwanath, Ram Mandir, SGPC) only people of their own faith are involved, similarly the presence of non-Muslim members in Waqf boards is a constitutional inequality. Similarly, the power given to the collector to determine Waqf property without any judicial process is a violation of constitutional rights. The leaders said that while other religious institutions have the freedom to run their internal affairs independently, the amendments to the Waqf Act are only imposing restrictions on Muslims.
On this occasion, a memorandum was given to the President in the name of the community, through which the central government was demanded to immediately repeal this controversial law. Seeking immediate action on this issue, the memorandum made three main demands from the government, which included immediate repeal of the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025, restoration of the original Waqf Act 1995, granting equal rights to Muslims like other religious institutions, and restoration of exemption from the Limitation Act for protection of properties.
