Patiala, December 2: DAV Public School Patiala celebrated World AIDS Day to create awareness about HIV/AIDS among students, teachers and the society. In the morning assembly, Mrs. Madhu Khanna, Head, Science Department, delivered a speech on the importance of awareness, prevention and support about AIDS.

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus which attacks the body’s immune system. If left untreated, HIV can cause AIDS. Which is a condition that severely weakens the immune system. HIV spreads in a few ways.
Sharing needles or syringes contaminated with infected blood, from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding, blood transfusion from an infected donor etc. Dr. Sonia also explained the preventive measures for this life-threatening disease such as getting tested regularly for HIV. Avoid sharing personal items like razors or toothbrushes, support safe blood donation practices. Principal Vivek Tiwari stressed the need for awareness and education about HIV/AIDS, saying, “HIV information for our students is to provide emotional support and counselling to the victims and create an environment free from discrimination. Celebrating World AIDS Day, the school principal, teachers and students collectively spread awareness and knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention by tying red ribbons.
