Chandigarh- Bihar Foundation ( Govt of Bihar initiative) and Purvanchal Association, two organizations working for the welfare of migrant communities from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, have expressed serious concern over social media discussions suggesting that migrant workers are allegedly being forced to leave Punjab.
In a joint statement issued by the two organizations, they emphasized that “Ensuring the safety of migrant workers, who have contributed their hard work and sweat to Punjab’s progress, is the responsibility of the state government.” They also expressed confidence that “the spirit of brotherhood between the local population and the migrant community in Punjab will be maintained, and that the government will take strict action against elements trying to disrupt this harmony.”
Dr. Rupesh Kumar Singh, Chairman of the Punjab and Chandigarh Chapter of Bihar Foundation, provided further details on the matter, stating, “We are in contact with the Punjab government regarding this issue. There is an atmosphere of fear among the people, and reports are emerging of workers returning to their home states. We trust the state government will act vigilantly and issue necessary directives to the police and administration to strengthen the sense of security among migrant workers.”
Dr. Singh added that amid the ongoing uncertainty regarding the safety of migrant Biharis in the region, they are also reaching out to the Bihar government to facilitate high-level discussions between both state governments.
DK Singh, President of the Chandigarh unit of the Purvanchal Association, stated, “We urge the state government to instruct all district administrations to take strict action against those attempting to incite unrest or violence, so that migrant workers can feel safe here.”
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has clearly stated that every citizen has the right to live and work in any part of the country. He added that Punjab has always been a land for hardworking people and assured that the government is fully committed to ensuring their safety.
