Ludhiana, 22 September 2025- Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, is set to organise a two-day Pashu Palan Mela on 26 and 27 September. According to Dr Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education, farmers have shown overwhelming interest in the event, as reflected in the numerous queries being received.
The mela will highlight the university’s latest technologies and provide knowledge through exhibitions and direct farmer–scientist interactions. Technical sessions covering scientific practices in livestock, fisheries and poultry farming will be conducted on both days, enabling farmers to adopt methods best suited for scientific rearing of livestock, fish & poultry. Additionally interactive Question & Answer sessions will be arranged throughout the event.
Top-quality animals, sourced from the university including cattle, buffalo, goats and poultry, will be showcased to inspire farmers to upgrade their herds with superior germplasm. Relevant literature on dairy, poultry, pig, fish and goat farming, as well as Packages of Practices for Animal Husbandry and the university’s magazine Vigiyanak Pashu Palan, will be available for visitors.
Dr Grewal shared that the university’s own products — such as area-specific mineral mixtures, uromin lick, and bypass fat — will be sold at nominal prices. Demonstrations will be conducted on urea treatment of wheat/paddy straw, preparation of mineral supplements, use of teat dip, and application of acaricides. Free testing facilities for mastitis, internal parasites, milk and feed samples, and nitrate poisoning in fodder will be provided.
Farmers may also bring samples of blood, faeces, urine and skin scrapings for diagnosis of various diseases. Brucellosis testing will be offered for both animals and humans. A university-developed milk testing kit, capable of detecting five common adulterants — sugar, starch, urea, neutraliser and hydrogen peroxide — will also be available for purchase.
Dr Jatinder Paul Singh Gill, Vice-Chancellor shared that the mela is drawing farmers and stakeholders from neighbouring states as well. More than 100 companies associated with livestock, including those in pharmaceuticals, cattle feed, semen production, equipment, machinery, fodder seed and feed supplements, will set up stalls at the exhibition. Farmer organisations affiliated with the university will also showcase their work.
He said that this year's mela will create awareness about better care for the next generation of dairy animal, i.e. calves and reflected in its slogan: “Kattru- Vachhru da Suchja Parbandh, Banaye Dairy Kitte nu Lahewand.” To further encourage scientific livestock farming. The university will present “Chief Minister Awards” to four outstanding farmers in the categories of Cattle, Poultry and Value-Added Products.
