Campaign against child begging continues under Jeevan Jot Project.

Nawanshahr- As part of the ongoing campaign in the district on the instructions of the Director Women and Child Development Department, a checking campaign was conducted against child begging at the bus stand, Kothi Road, Banga Road Railway Road of Nawanshahr and three children below the age of 18 years were freed.

On the instructions of Deputy Commissioner Ankurjit Singh, a campaign against child begging is being run in the district for the implementation of Project Jeevan Jot. Under the leadership of District Program Officer Jagroop Singh and under the chairmanship of District Child Protection Officer Kanchan Arora, a checking campaign was conducted at the bus stand, Kothi Road, Banga Road Railway Road of Nawanshahr.
Kanchan Arora said that during the investigation, the team freed three children below the age of 18 years, after which they were presented before the Child Welfare Committee so that further action could be taken to ensure the safety of the children. The District Child Protection Officer made the shopkeepers and the general public aware and said that making children below the age of 18 years beg is a crime.
To eradicate child begging, begging children should not be given money in alms but their parents should be counselled so that they send their children to school instead of begging. On this occasion, Child Protection Officer Gaurav Sharma also informed about the sponsorship scheme being run by the government for needy children, under which needy and helpless children are given financial assistance of Rs 4000 per month for the education of their children.
Apart from this, he made the taxi drivers and the general public present at the bus stand aware about all kinds of atrocities being committed on children these days and appealed to ensure their safety and said that if any person sees any child below the age of 18 years begging, then information about this should be given to the District Child Protection Unit, Room No. 309, 2nd Floor, DC Office or Child Helpline Number 1098. 
The checking team included Child Protection Officer Gaurav Sharma and Santosh DEO, Supervisor Harbhajan Kaur from CDPO office, Mehar Chand ASI and Surjeet Singh from Police department as well as Primary Teacher Mohit Gumbar from Education department.
