S.A.S. Nagar, May 22- During the storm that hit Sector 79 last evening, 20-20 feet high tin sheets installed in place of walls at the construction site of flats being built for central government employees fell on the vehicles of the residents of the sector, damaging many vehicles.
Municipal Councillor Mr. Harjeet Singh Bholu informed that flats for central government employees are being constructed at the site opposite Sohana Police Station in Sector 79 and the contractor had covered the site by installing 20 feet high tin sheets around it. He said that the contractor had installed the sheets here, but did not make strong support for them, due to which it seemed from the beginning that these sheets could fall at any time.
He informed that despite residents expressing concern, no attention was paid to the issue even after talks with the contractor. He had also spoken to the Executive Officer of GMADA in this regard, who had assured action, but nothing was done.
He said that when the storm came around 5 pm yesterday, these tin sheets got uprooted and fell on people's vehicles, due to which 15-20 vehicles were damaged, although fortunately there was no loss of life. He said that when the residents asked the company to remove these sheets this morning, no action was taken.
He said that when he threatened to sit on a dharna with the residents and stop the work of the project, then the company started removing the sheets from there. He said that the electricity department also suffered due to the falling of these sheets and since 5 pm yesterday, power supply has been disrupted from house number 1500 to 1616 of the sector.
Councillor Harjeet Singh Bholu demanded that the residents whose vehicles have been damaged should be given proper compensation. He warned the company managers that if the sheets were not removed by this evening, he would take legal action against the company.
