Jammu, May 4: Pakistani security forces continued to resort to unprovoked small arms firing in various sectors along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Officials said that Pakistan violated ceasefire at eight places in five districts of the Union Territory on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, to which the Indian Army retaliated befittingly. However, no casualties were reported.
This is the tenth consecutive night of unprovoked firing from across the border in Jammu and Kashmir amid rising tensions between the two countries following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 tourists.
The defence spokesperson said, “On the intervening night of May 3 and 4, unprovoked small arms firing was carried out from Pakistani military posts along the LoC in Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Nowshera, Sunderbani and Akhnoor sectors. The Indian Army gave a befitting reply.”
Since the renewal of the ceasefire agreement by India and Pakistan on February 25, 2021, ceasefire violations along the LoC and the International Border (IB) have reduced significantly. Meanwhile, people in border villages, alarmed by the daily shelling, have started cleaning their collective and individual bunkers as a precautionary measure.
Since the night of April 24, hours after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty following the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistani troops have been resorting to unprovoked firing at various places along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir, starting from the Kashmir Valley.
Initially, unprovoked small arms firing started at several posts along the Line of Control in Kupwara and Baramulla districts of North Kashmir, but Pakistan quickly extended the ceasefire violation to Poonch sector and later to Akhnoor sector of Jammu region. This was followed by small arms firing at several posts along the Line of Control in Sunderbani and Nowshera sectors of Rajouri district. Later, the firing spread to Mendhar in Poonch district and Pargwal sector of Jammu district up to the International Border.
