"Scrap to Solution" – A Call for Sustainable Engineering

Chandigarh: 01st may, 2025: Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) - PEC Student Chapter, in collaboration with Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, successfully organized the flagship event METALIIM 2025, as a one-day celebration of innovation, sustainability and recyclability under the theme “Scrap to Solution.” The event served as a platform to promote green practices and encourage students to ideate sustainable solutions to real-world challenges through engaging competitions and interactive learning experiences.

Chandigarh: 01st may, 2025: Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) - PEC Student Chapter, in collaboration with Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, successfully organized the flagship event METALIIM 2025, as a one-day celebration of innovation, sustainability and recyclability under the theme “Scrap to Solution.” The event served as a platform to promote green practices and encourage students to ideate sustainable solutions to real-world challenges through engaging competitions and interactive learning experiences.
The event was held under the esteemed supervision of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, PEC Chandigarh and witnessed enthusiastic participation from students within and outside PEC, creating an enriching environment of cross-college collaboration and learning.
This year’s theme, “Scrap to Solution,” aimed to emphasize the urgent need for sustainable solutions in materials engineering, highlighting the role of recycling and green innovation. Each competition was thoughtfully designed to spark creativity, technical awareness and problem-solving skills, keeping sustainability at its core. 

The following Competitions were conducted - 
1.     Green Meme Challenge: A creative and fun-filled competition that invited participants to make memes on green innovation, recyclability and environmental challenges. The activity received great engagement and provided a lighter, yet impactful, take on the theme.
2.     Recycle Relay – Quiz Competition:This dynamic quiz tested the participants' knowledge of sustainable materials, recycling processes and green technologies. It saw a turnout of over 50 participants, including students from PEC and other institutions, highlighting its wide appeal and success.
3.     Recyclothon – Flagship Presentation Competition: The central attraction of METALIIM 2025, Recyclothon saw the participation of 8 student teams, including 7 from PEC and 1 from Rayat Bahra University, Punjab. Each team showcased innovative solutions aligned with sustainability, with ideas ranging from mineral recycling and rare element recovery to clean water solutions and battery reuse for e-mobility. These were presented before an esteemed judging panel comprising faculty members from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The presentations reflected technical depth, creativity and relevance to modern sustainable practices.
4.   Mat Race – Materials Science Treasure Hunt: A fun and intellectually stimulating event, Mat Race was a treasure hunt-style game involving clues and puzzles based on materials science and sustainability. The event served as a unique way to engage students while reinforcing subject knowledge through gamification.
Approximately 150 Students Participated, representating PEC Chandigarh and external colleges including Rayat Bahra University, showing Interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement on themes of sustainability, innovation and green engineering

Convenors of METALIIM 2025, Manish Sharma (Secretary, IIM Student Chapter, PEC) and Shailesh Swaroop, coordinated and led the event with dedication, creativity, and organizational excellence.
