New Delhi, April 17 - The Supreme Court on Thursday hinted at setting up a commission of inquiry to "in-depth probe" into the affairs of sports associations in the country. The top court said that "all kinds of things are happening" in these associations except sports activities.
A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotishwar Singh was hearing a petition by two national kabaddi players in which the court had earlier sought views on a CBI probe into the affairs of the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) and the International Kabaddi Federation.
The bench said, "We are ready to appoint an inquiry commission to thoroughly investigate the affairs of kabaddi associations because apart from sports activities, all kinds of things are happening in these institutions. We also intend to extend the scope of the inquiry commission to other sports associations.’’ Additional Solicitor General K.M. Nataraj, appearing for the Centre, said that as per the bench’s February 4 order, the players were sent to a tournament in Iran, where they won and won a gold medal. Nataraj said that as far as the CBI inquiry is concerned, the modalities are being prepared for it. He sought two more weeks to work on it, after which the bench said that it will investigate the cases of all the state and international sports associations in the country and if necessary, dissolve them.
