Chandigarh- Questions are being raised on the 352nd General House Meeting of the Municipal Corporation held on 26 August 2025. Many important decisions taken in this meeting have been termed completely illegal and arbitrary by the opposition councillors and Senior Deputy Mayor.
Senior Deputy Mayor Jasbir Singh Bunty, Deputy Mayor Taruna Mehta and Councillor Prem Lata have written a letter to the Local Bodies Secretary-Home Secretary, UT Chandigarh demanding that the proposals passed in the meeting be declared cancelled.
Opposition councillors forcibly evicted
The letter alleges that during the meeting, when the agenda related to the transfer of V-3 roads was being discussed, the opposition councillors were forcibly evicted from the meeting without any reason. They say that the councillors only wanted to exercise their right to vote, but the mayor violated the democratic process by getting them out.
According to the letter, 15 opposition and 13 ruling party councillors were present in the meeting. In such a situation, it was difficult to pass the agenda in the presence of the opposition, so the agenda was forcibly passed by excluding the opposition.
Questions on housing project too
Similarly, the supplementary agenda related to multi-story group housing was also passed in the absence of the opposition. It has been alleged that this decision has been taken arbitrarily and illegally, which is likely to benefit some people.
Demand for investigation and action
The opposition councillors said that the Municipal Corporation is going through a bad financial situation, despite that the corporation is being harmed by conducting auction in such an opaque manner. They have demanded that all the decisions taken in the 352nd meeting of the House be cancelled and a new meeting be called in the presence of opposition councillors.
Instead of taking decisions arbitrarily, decisions should be taken in the presence of councillors and after discussion so that the Municipal Corporation can get full revenue from the auction.
The letter is signed by Senior Deputy Mayor Jasbir Singh Bunty, Deputy Mayor Taruna Mehta and Councilor Prem Lata.
